Everyone who has just finished the OSSA Academy has had a fresh experience trying to count paces and navigate at the same time. With more going on during a real search, keeping track of your paces can be a lot more challenging. Don't overlook the less techy tools. These marching beads don't require satellites, batteries, or a detailed manual to use effectively.

Use by counting paces and pulling down one of the nine beads for every 100 meters. When you have pulled all nine down at the count of 10 x 100 meter pull one of the top beads down to signify 1000 meters and push the nine beads up to continue counting.
14 Beads, 38 inches of para cord. Remove inner stands.
Fold para cord in half and one stand in half and loop together, use strand to thread beads.
Thread all beads and make a loop 1.5 inch loop at the top with an overhand knot.
Separate 9 beads for the bottom and as many that are left for the top (5) leave enough space to move, and tie another overhand knot.
Finish the bottom the same with an over hand knot.
More here on the use of these beads in the military and other places.
